mer

I doodled up a picture so I could try to emulate Mike Puncekar's awesome photoshop filtery skills. Mild success... I'm still waiting for technology to give me the ability to steal people's knowledge via telepathic brain waves or cranial injection.

poke colors

OMG! The talented Mike Puncekar colored two of my pictures, and they look BADASS!!! I'm giddy. :)

!!!!!!!!

all junk, no stuff

Yeah, so I've been doing a little too many non art related things lately. Mostly playing minecraft, going to the aquarium, enjoying spring break, and being a bum. (And beating myself up for not doing more art.) AH WELL, I've created a tumblr to fuel my ADD anyways. What can I say? I need somewhere to reblog funny GIFs!

I've been trying to muster up the drive to get drawings again, and had a few small revelations. First, I'm WAYYY out of practice. I was thinking about how I've come to this point, and I realize it's because all those stupid computer doodles I used to do all the time. Let me elaborate; drawing is not just a skill, it's a practice.  Before I went to art school I drew purely for the fun of it,  mostly lots and lots of small digital drawings for website like Gaia Online(back when it was go-gaia) or Livejournal. Even though I rarely did large scale colored illustrations, this practice was still invaluable.  The motions and flows of working digitally is an incredibly unique experience, that can't be mimicked in any real media. Experiencing the action itself, even just doing a huge sheet of scribbles, contributes to your technique.  I find that since I've started attending art school, I actually draw a lot less. (Which I'm trying to remedy!) I focus all my energy on the illustration, on the end result. Between illustrations I do very little sketching, and when I do it usually has to do with my current project. This is BAAAD, BAD, BAD!!! You need to do those stupid little doodles. They don't have to mean anything, or even see the light of day! The practice is what counts, and it shines through very strongly when you go to work on that large piece.

Another realization I've made that is sketching is the most important thing you can spend your time doing. Pencil sketching is the basic bottom step in drawing, and being able to do it well is an asset. Of course it's a given that the basics are most important. Mastering sketching clean, beautiful images seems so daunting.. My new resolution is the create at LEAST one sketch a day. (In pencil!)

Last night I was hoping to draw, so I asked some people to name pokemon. I drew them totally from memory, and well, improvised a lot. I haven't played a pokemon game in quite a while, suffice it to say my memory of them was rusty.

Check them all out here! And Yes, I'll be adding more!

iPhones are cool

My friend Katie showed me a cool app! Hipstamatic, it makes your photos all vintage and artsy

I've already spied Seth Green using this app on his twitter. :) He seems like a bit of a hipster.

Apple bucker

For those of you keeping a close eye on the situation in Japan, it's very easy to donate to the tsunami relief effort. Just text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 (Canadians text 30333).

Despite being glued to the news, I have had time to distract myself with another MLP drawing! Three down, three more to go.

Twilight Sparkle wanders down an alleyway

Twilight came out a lot more pastel than Dash. I know her arm is retarded, I'm too lazy to fix it.

edit: better

I think(?) I finished my background! Now, the hard part. :'(

WIP - so frustrating

I've got little eyes peeping at me while I work this morning. Oh, don't mind my beer pants.

WIP so far of the background of my zombie picture. It's looking pretty sad right now, I'm finding it difficult to keep myself motivated.

I'm trying to break some bad habits and experiment with different brushes lately. Admittedly, my picture doesn't represent that. I'm interested in what kind of brushes other artists might use to approach this image; I really need to find a good forum for artists. (Less intimidating than cg hub and conceptart maybe.)

Zombies!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been working on a zombie illustration for school. I've been trying to draw a lot of zombies to get myself revved up for my large scale final illustration, including some zombie Derpy's on flockdraw, and my friend Katie all classy-like.

Of course I've been doing non-zombie drawings on flockdraw also. :)

Honestly, I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut. Mostly because I'm avoiding the shit out of my zombie project. This is really the same familiar feeling I get whenever I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. Falling back on some traditional studies help, but I really just need to stop being such a wuss and just DRAW!

Have I mentioned I enrolled in a schoolism class with Bobby Chiu this summer? HELL YES I'M EXCITED! I have yet to take a digital painting class, and I am psyched to finally get a little direction. I wanna be, the very best . . .  Practicing digital can be daunting sometimes, because there is such an infinite spectrum of techniques it's often confusing to figure out how to tackle a picture with no guidance. Sometimes I like to just throw a lot of textures on a drawing, then pretend it looks good! I call it a "texture doodle".

Hmm, maybe I re-use textures too much!

Well, I've always got Derpcraft.
